🎙️ In this episode of the Landmark Difference Makers Podcast, we dive into the incredible impact of the Academies for Social Entrepreneurship (ASE) with Betsy Densmore, the founder, and Archie Holton, a key leader in its growth. Together, they share how ASE has been fostering social innovation by equipping nonprofits and students with the tools to create sustainable ventures that address pressing societal challenges.
About the Academies for Social Entrepreneurship
Founded in 2009, ASE is a unique incubator program designed to help nonprofits develop social enterprises—business ventures that advance their mission while generating revenue. Operating in collaboration with strategic partners like UCLA, ASE provides participants with expert mentorship, business training, and funding opportunities. The program pairs nonprofit leaders with teams of university students, creating a dynamic exchange of ideas and expertise.
As Betsy describes, “Our aim is to not only build successful businesses but to grow people—leaders who can combine creativity, courage, and heart to make a difference.”
Building Social Ventures with Impact
The Academies’ approach is rigorous yet heart-centered, focusing on empowering participants to turn their passions into scalable ventures. Over the course of five to six months, participants undergo a transformative process that includes:
- Conducting feasibility studies and market research.
- Developing comprehensive business plans.
- Crafting compelling pitches to attract funding and support.
Archie’s work with participants embodies ASE’s philosophy of blending business acumen with personal transformation. As a former classroom leader in Landmark’s Introduction Leader Program, Archie brings unique coaching techniques to help participants tap into their authenticity and purpose. He explains, “When people connect with the possibility of what they’re creating, their passion shines through—and that’s what inspires others to join them.”
A Legacy of Success
The Academies have supported countless organizations and individuals in making a measurable difference. From developing telehealth clinics serving 20 million people in Myanmar to empowering cancer survivors with dignity through wig-making ventures, ASE’s alumni represent a broad spectrum of innovation and impact.
Equally impressive are the program’s student participants, many of whom go on to become global leaders in their fields. Archie shares stories of former students who now work at the United Nations, assist with climate accords, or lead their own social enterprises. “They leave with more than knowledge—they leave with a commitment to change the world,” he says.
Lessons in Overcoming Doubt
Both Betsy and Archie emphasize the importance of stepping beyond fear and doubt when pursuing change. “Don’t go it alone,” Betsy advises. “Find people to play with, and remember that what seems hard may not be as daunting once you take the first step.” Archie adds, “When you embrace possibility, the constraints disappear, and anything becomes achievable.”
