🎙️ In this episode of the Landmark Difference Makers Podcast, we speak with Bakaki Umar, founder of the OHI Life Center Initiative, an orphanage and training center in Uganda that provides care, education, and vocational training to children who have nowhere else to turn.
A Mission Born from Personal Experience
Bakaki’s journey began with personal hardship—losing his father at the age of nine, he grew up witnessing the struggles of orphans firsthand. His experiences shaped his determination to be the difference for children facing similar challenges. During the COVID-19 pandemic, a pivotal moment changed the course of his life: children on the streets, hungry and desperate, asked him not only for food but for a place to belong. That was the moment he knew he had to take action.
With limited resources but an unshakable commitment, Bakaki and his family opened their home, eventually growing into an orphanage that now supports 50 children aged 4 to 18.
Building More Than Shelter—Creating Opportunity
Beyond providing a safe home, OHI Life Center is dedicated to education and skills training. Bakaki, an entrepreneur and graphic designer, understands the power of economic independence. In addition to running the orphanage, he launched a free training center to teach young people graphic design and computer skills, empowering them with tools for self-sufficiency and a brighter future.
Challenges and Triumphs
Running an orphanage is no small feat. From securing government permits to ensuring enough food, beds, and educational opportunities for all the children, Bakaki faces daily struggles. Yet, through community support, resilience, and unwavering faith, he continues to create a nurturing environment where children find purpose and hope.
One of his biggest goals is to secure permanent land for the orphanage, allowing them to grow their own food and provide greater stability for the children. Currently, the facility is rented, and resources like beds, mattresses, and nutritious meals are in short supply.
The Role of Landmark in His Leadership
Bakaki credits Landmark’s programs with opening his mindset and giving him the confidence to take on leadership at a larger scale. Before participating in The Landmark Forum, he doubted his ability to manage such a large responsibility. Today, he has developed the resilience and clarity to make bold requests for support, advocate for the children, and see possibility where others see obstacles.
A Call to Action
Bakaki’s work is a testament to the ripple effect of making a difference—he sees his children as future leaders, educators, and changemakers. His dream is not just to help them survive but to equip them to thrive and give back to their communities.
