🌍 In this episode of the Landmark Difference Makers Podcast, we celebrate the extraordinary journey of Roshni Rai, an ultramarathoner, lawyer, author, and founder of the Run with Roshni Foundation. From her beginnings in a small village in West Bengal, India, to becoming an advocate for underprivileged Gurkha runners on the global stage, Roshni’s story is one of resilience, self-discovery, and a commitment to empowering others.
From Non-Athlete to Ultramarathoner
Roshni’s journey into running began unexpectedly at the age of 27, while studying law in Mumbai. Inspired by advertisements for the Mumbai Marathon, she signed up for her first half marathon, despite having no athletic background. Though her debut race left her bedridden with injuries, it sparked a passion that propelled her into full marathons and ultramarathons. “Running gave me a new perspective on life and helped me discover my inner strength,” Roshni shares.
Guided by her coach, she developed into an accomplished long-distance runner. However, running became more than a personal pursuit—it transformed into a mission to uplift her Gurkha community.
Run with Roshni: A Vision of Empowerment
In 2012, during Landmark’s Self-Expression and Leadership Program, Roshni launched Run with Roshni, a project close to her heart. The foundation supports young Gurkha runners from the hills of Darjeeling and Kalimpong, providing opportunities to compete in marathons across India. The mission? To showcase the talent of Gurkha athletes and assert their identity as proud Indians.
“Many people don’t realize that Nepali-speaking Gurkhas are Indian citizens, and this misunderstanding often leads to identity crises,” Roshni explains. Through her foundation, she seeks to change this narrative by empowering runners to represent India on the global stage, spreading the message: We are Gurkhas and proud to be Indian.
Breaking Barriers and Opening Doors
Despite limited resources and training facilities, Gurkha runners possess natural talent honed by their high-altitude upbringing. Roshni’s foundation organizes local half-marathons to identify promising athletes, many of whom run extraordinary times without professional training. With support from Run with Roshni, these runners gain access to national marathons and opportunities for personal growth.
The impact extends beyond sport. Participation in marathons often boosts the confidence and aspirations of young runners. Many have secured jobs in the Indian Army, citing their marathon achievements as key to their success. “Running changes their perspective on life,” Roshni says. “It shows them that they have a future beyond the limitations of their small villages.”
A Bold Vision for the Future
Roshni envisions a future where Gurkha runners not only dominate Indian marathons but also represent India in the Olympics. Her dream includes creating an academy to support runners with training, nutrition, and education, ensuring they can focus fully on their potential.
In her own words, “Ten years from now, I see Gurkha runners competing in the Olympics, carrying the pride of their community and inspiring the world.”
A Legacy of Courage and Inspiration
Roshni’s life is a testament to the power of following one’s passion and using it to uplift others. She wants to be remembered as someone who empowered people to live life fully and fearlessly. “I hope to inspire every girl to live without baggage and embrace their true potential,” she says.
