Environmental Restoration for At Risk Populations – Uynghiem Ngo

🎙️ In this episode of the Landmark Difference Makers Podcast, we feature Uynghiem Ngo, a passionate environmentalist and community leader based in the Dominican Republic. Uynghiem has dedicated his life to combining environmental restoration with community empowerment, creating innovative solutions to combat climate change and foster sustainable development.

A Life-Changing Mission
Uynghiem’s journey began with his firsthand experience of environmental degradation, including coral bleaching and the destruction of mangroves. Witnessing these impacts fueled his commitment to restoring ecosystems while addressing the root causes of poverty and social inequality in coastal communities. As the Chief Operations Officer of the Global Coalition, Uynghiem collaborates with local leaders and organizations to develop solutions that benefit both people and the planet.

Rebuilding Ecosystems to Protect Communities
Uynghiem’s work emphasizes the vital connection between mangroves and coral reefs, both essential for protecting coastal regions. Mangroves act as natural barriers, filtering pollutants and preventing erosion, while coral reefs provide critical habitats for marine life and reduce the impact of waves. Together, they form a natural defense system against hurricanes and rising sea levels—threats that increasingly affect island nations like the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

Through reforestation efforts, Uynghiem and his team have planted over 600,000 trees, including mangroves, to restore these ecosystems. His work not only combats climate change but also empowers local communities to protect their natural resources.

The Power of Community Engagement
Uynghiem believes meaningful environmental restoration starts with people. By involving communities in the process, he addresses the economic and social pressures that drive harmful practices like deforestation and mangrove clearing. Uynghiem works to provide education, tools, and opportunities for sustainable livelihoods, such as teaching locals to grow moringa trees, which offer nutritional benefits and economic potential.

Uynghiem’s approach prioritizes building trust and relationships. “The first conversation is always about understanding their needs and showing them they’re not in trouble,” he explains. This foundation of respect creates an opening for collaboration and long-term change.

A Vision for the Future
Uynghiem’s ultimate goal is to create a world where environmental restoration and community empowerment go hand in hand. He envisions a future where local communities take ownership of sustainable practices and global travelers contribute meaningfully to the places they visit. Through partnerships with organizations like Virgin Voyages, he has introduced eco-tourism experiences that allow visitors to plant trees and directly support local ecosystems.

Finding Inspiration in Possibility
Landmark’s programs have been instrumental in Uynghiem’s journey. By embracing the distinction of “possibility,” he has been able to overcome cynicism and take bold steps toward his vision. “I’m standing for what’s possible in the face of nothing,” Uynghiem shares. His unwavering commitment inspires others to see themselves as agents of change, capable of making a profound difference.
