🎙️ In this profound episode of the Landmark Difference Makers Podcast, we speak with Murray Van der Veer, a filmmaker passionate about Australia’s shared history, and Wayne Carberry, a proud Yuin man deeply connected to his culture, community, and the land. Together, they are collaborating on the inspiring project Yarning on Country, a film and cultural initiative that supports healing, connection, and storytelling for local Aboriginal men.
Yarning on Country: The Power of Connection and Storytelling
“Yarning on Country” emerged from Wayne’s experience growing up as a hunter, gatherer, and custodian of his ancestral lands. He recognized that for many Indigenous men, being on country—hunting, gathering, and reconnecting with nature—creates a safe space for sharing stories, expressing emotions, and healing. These moments of connection, Wayne explains, allow men to return home as better partners, fathers, and community members.
Murray and Wayne’s collaboration highlights the transformative power of storytelling. Through film, they aim to amplify Indigenous voices, showcase the richness of Aboriginal culture, and challenge stereotypes that persist in Australian society. Wayne beautifully puts it: “If we respect all living things, we can respect anyone.”
A Meeting of Worlds
The partnership began when Murray witnessed Wayne’s talent for capturing the beauty and spirit of a corroboree—a traditional gathering that brings together Yuin people through music, dance, and storytelling. Their shared passion for storytelling led them to create a project that not only documents Aboriginal traditions but also fosters reconciliation and mutual understanding between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.
For Murray, telling these stories is about honoring the past while creating a future where non-Indigenous and Indigenous Australians walk together in respect and harmony. “There’s so much richness in Aboriginal communities,” he shares, “and there are lessons for all of us—about generosity, connection, and care.”
Healing Generational Divides
Murray reflects on the challenges of addressing Australia’s colonial history, where acknowledgment is still often absent. His commitment to pushing past discomfort to facilitate dialogue and connection has led to powerful moments of healing. As Wayne shares, nature and cultural storytelling provide lessons of balance, respect, and love—values that can guide reconciliation efforts for future generations.
A Vision for the Future
Both Murray and Wayne are clear about the possibility they see for the future: a world where Indigenous stories are told, respected, and celebrated. By giving Aboriginal communities a platform to share their history, traditions, and dreams, the two hope to bridge divides and inspire others to join the work of reconciliation.
Wayne leaves us with a powerful call to action: “Go out and reconnect. Find purpose. Do something kind every day, even for a stranger. Respect all living things, and you’ll learn to respect anyone.”
