🌍 In this episode of the Landmark Difference Makers Podcast, we are honored to feature Dr. Paula Kahumbu, an internationally renowned conservationist, National Geographic Explorer, and CEO of WildlifeDirect. Known for her relentless advocacy against elephant poaching and ivory trafficking, Dr. Kahumbu has spent decades championing wildlife conservation and inspiring transformative change across Africa. From her groundbreaking Hands Off Our Elephants campaign to her innovative storytelling initiatives, Dr. Kahumbu’s work exemplifies the power of leadership, resilience, and vision.
A Childhood Rooted in Nature and a Career Born from Passion
Growing up on the outskirts of Nairobi, surrounded by forests and wildlife, Paula developed a deep connection to nature at an early age. Despite her family’s financial challenges, she followed her passion for wildlife, often sneaking into libraries to read about the natural world. A pivotal moment came when she met renowned paleoanthropologist Dr. Richard Leakey, who became her mentor and opened the door to a career in conservation.
Paula’s journey led her to a Ph.D. in ecology and evolutionary biology at Princeton University, where she specialized in studying elephants. “Knocking on Dr. Leakey’s door was a leap of faith,” she recalls, “but it changed my life and set me on a path I never imagined.”
The Fight Against Elephant Poaching
As CEO of WildlifeDirect, Dr. Kahumbu launched the Hands Off Our Elephants campaign, one of Africa’s most impactful conservation initiatives. Partnering with Kenya’s First Lady Margaret Kenyatta, Paula brought global attention to the plight of elephants, whose populations have been decimated by poaching and habitat loss.
“Elephants are universally beloved, yet they are endangered,” Paula says. “Our mission is to rally governments, communities, and individuals to protect these incredible animals before it’s too late.”
Her work led to major policy shifts, including Kenya’s historic ivory burn in 2016, a symbolic act that sent a clear message to the world: the ivory trade has no place in Africa’s future.
The Power of Storytelling in Conservation
Recognizing the influence of storytelling, Paula turned to wildlife filmmaking to engage local communities and inspire global action. She created Wildlife Warriors, a series that highlights African conservationists and their efforts to protect biodiversity. In 2023, Paula became the first African presenter for National Geographic’s Secrets of the Elephants, a landmark series exploring the lives of these majestic creatures.
“Stories have the power to change behavior and inspire action,” Paula explains. “When local communities see themselves represented in these narratives, it creates a sense of pride and urgency to protect what’s theirs.”
Lessons in Leadership and Resilience
Dr. Kahumbu’s participation in Landmark programs gave her the courage to take bold steps in her career. “At a time when I felt helpless in the face of poaching, the Landmark Forum helped me reclaim my power,” she shares. “It challenged me to see obstacles as opportunities and to approach even the most daunting situations with clarity and purpose.”
Her commitment to authenticity and collaboration has been a cornerstone of her success. By building trust and focusing on shared goals, Paula has forged alliances with governments, NGOs, and communities to drive meaningful change.
A Vision for the Future
Looking ahead, Paula envisions a world where conservation is not just the responsibility of a few but a shared value across societies. She continues to mentor young conservationists, empowering them to take the mantle and innovate solutions for Africa’s biodiversity crisis.
“It only takes one person to inspire change,” Paula says. “My hope is to create a ripple effect, where the next generation builds on what we’ve started to create a future where humans and wildlife coexist harmoniously.”
