Transforming Lives Through Rugby- Star Scheme

🌟 In this episode of the Landmark Difference Makers Podcast, we shine a light on Dan Wooler and Christian Lang, the visionaries behind the Star Scheme, a groundbreaking nonprofit that uses rugby to empower young people facing adversity. From providing a sense of belonging to creating life-changing opportunities, the Star Scheme is not just about rugby—it’s about transforming lives.

What Is the Star Scheme?

The Star Scheme began as a grassroots initiative to help young people dealing with adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and mental health challenges. By leveraging the community-building power of rugby, the program connects children and families to supportive networks, creating safe spaces for healing, growth, and empowerment.

As Dan explains, “Rugby is a game for everyone. It doesn’t matter your size, shape, or skill set—there’s a place for you. That inclusivity mirrors what we aim to create at the Star Scheme: a sense of belonging and opportunity for every young person.”

The Unique Power of Rugby

Rugby’s structure and values make it a unique tool for fostering resilience and connection. Unlike other sports, rugby celebrates diverse roles and skills, offering a place for everyone. “In rugby, respect is at the heart of the game,” says Christian. “Whether it’s players respecting referees or teammates respecting one another, these values translate into a safe and welcoming environment—especially for kids who need it most.”

The scheme’s impact extends beyond the pitch. Through relationships with coaches, teammates, and supportive adults, young participants build trust, self-esteem, and a sense of purpose. Many parents also find a “rugby home” for themselves, volunteering and becoming part of the broader community.

Born from Resilience

The Star Scheme began during the global pandemic—a time when isolation and uncertainty were at an all-time high. What started as a local effort to raise funds for a small rugby club quickly evolved into a full-fledged movement. The catalyst? A young boy named Daley, who faced immense trauma, including the loss of his father. Daley found solace and strength through rugby, eventually earning a spot in the prestigious Bristol Bears Academy.

This story inspired donors and communities alike, leading to the formal creation of the Star Scheme. “The magic of the scheme is its simplicity,” Dan shares. “It’s about providing a space where kids feel safe, cared for, and encouraged.”

Scaling the Vision

The Star Scheme is rapidly expanding, with operations now in five countries, including Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. The model, originally rooted in rugby, is also branching into other sports and even the arts, ensuring that its transformative impact reaches young people in every community.

“Wherever there are young people and trusted adults, the Star Scheme works,” Christian explains. “Our goal is to create a world where every child grows up in a supportive community that nurtures their potential.”

The Role of Landmark Training

Both Dan and Christian credit their training in Landmark programs as pivotal to the success of the Star Scheme. “Landmark gave us the tools to dream big and stay committed to the future we’ve created,” says Dan. The program’s focus on authentic listening and bold action has helped them build a thriving organization that continues to exceed expectations.
