In this inspiring episode of the Landmark Difference Makers Podcast, we sit down with Craig Hacche, founder and executive director of Answer Africa, an organization committed to empowering African leaders to create sustainable solutions in health, education, and economic opportunity.
At the heart of this work is a powerful partnership—and legacy—co-created with his late wife, Dr. McKenna Morangu, whose life and vision continue to shape everything Answer Africa stands for.
From One Child to a Global Vision
Craig shares the story that helped define their mission: a young boy in rural Kenya suffering from severe burn injuries without access to proper medical care. Dr. Morangu organized a surgical team to return and treat him—restoring not just his health, but his future.
That moment revealed something deeper:
“One rescue is compassion. Building systems is justice.”
This insight became the foundation for Answer Africa—moving beyond short-term aid toward long-term, sustainable impact.
From Aid to Empowerment
The organization’s early work focused on malaria prevention, delivering over 400,000 mosquito nets to remote communities in Kenya.
But over time, Craig and his team recognized that real change requires more than addressing immediate needs—it requires building infrastructure, education, and leadership from within.
Today, Answer Africa’s work includes:
- A fully operational Level 4 hospital with surgical capabilities
- The McKenna Maternity Center, providing life-saving care for mothers and children
- A Center of Champions, supporting youth through sports, education, and community
- STEM and technology programs, including training labs and mobile tech education
- Scholarship programs supporting young people through school and into careers
- Clean water initiatives, drilling wells and creating sustainable water access in remote villages
These are not temporary solutions—they are investments designed to last for generations.
Why Sustainability Matters
Craig is clear that meaningful impact requires confronting deeper systemic issues. For him, sustainability means:
- Listening to communities first
- Building alongside local leaders—not imposing external solutions
- Creating systems that continue long after outside support leaves
“Health is never just about medicine. It’s about opportunity, education, access, and trust.”
This commitment reflects a broader shift—from charity to partnership, from dependency to capacity.
Answering the Call
The name Answer Africa was born from a simple realization: once you see the need, you can’t ignore it.
Craig speaks candidly about what it takes to act—not just caring, but stepping in:
“It’s easy to do nothing. But to see something and step in—that takes courage.”
Through medical missions, community partnerships, and development projects, the organization continues to invite others to participate—not as observers, but as contributors.
A Legacy That Lives On
Though Dr. Morangu passed away in 2015, her vision remains at the center of the work. Her belief in building bridges—between people, communities, and possibilities—continues to guide Answer Africa’s next chapter.
As the organization looks ahead, it is working toward a bold goal: a $1 million initiative to expand sustainable development efforts across the communities it serves.
A Life That Makes a Difference
When asked how he hopes to be remembered, Craig’s answer is simple:
“He made a difference.”
And through Answer Africa, that difference is already being felt—across villages, families, and generations.
